Government Imposes New Garbage Tax

A province-wide garbage tax has been implemented in Punjab after receiving the green light from the provincial cabinet’s finance committee. The newly introduced tax will affect all residents, businesses, and commercial establishments, regardless of size or location, including those in rural, urban, and slum areas. The Punjab government has officially outlined the tax rates for various property types in a recent notification.

Property Monthly Tax
5 – 10 Marla HousesRs. 200
10 Marla – 1 Kanal and moreRs. 400
Small businesses and shopsRs. 300
Medium and large businessesRs. 700

This new garbage tax will hit residents of Lahore harder than those in other parts of the province. Due to the city’s larger population, greater waste generation, and more complex sanitation challenges, the tax rates in Lahore have been set significantly higher.

This tax aims to outsource sanitation services in 36 districts, covering 110 tehsils. You can read more about this initiative here – Punjab plans to collect Rs22bn through sanitation tax.
