Jinnah Depicted as a Flawed and Complicated Character in Upcoming New Indian Drama

Get ready to be transported back to history with the upcoming Indian drama “ Freedom At Midnight”, 

Based on the 1975 book of the same name. Freedom At Midnight Is a political drama that features the struggles and critical moments from when the British ruled over the subcontinent. 

A recent interview with Variety sheds light on the upcoming partition drama. Freedom at Midnight  Actor Arif Zakaria, who portrays the beloved Muhammad Ali Jinnah told Variety that he 

“realized how important it was to depict him [Jinnah] as a flawed and complicated human being rather than an untouchable hero”

Zakaria has been cast to play this role due to his striking resemblance to Muhammad Ali Jinnah. In an Instagram post, Advani said, “Any historical retelling of the Partition of the sub-continent is incomplete without Muhammad Ali Jinnah”.

Nikkhil Advani, the director behind the hit Bollywood movies Kal Ho Naa Ho and Salaam-e-Ishq,  is also set to direct this drama.

Furthermore, Ira Dubey has been set to play Fatima Jinnah. 

“My role in this series is unlike any other I have played in the past, bringing me a unique yet challenging opportunity as an actor. Fatima’s bond with her brother, Jinnah, and her influence on him is a lesser-known aspect. She played a significant role in his life, standing by him from the start until the end, and the series will shed light on this dynamic relationship,” Dubey said.

SonyLiv has also cast British actors to be on the TV drama. Actors Luke McGibney and Cordelia Bugeja will play the last Viceroy and Vicereine of India. Alistair Finlay will play Archibald Wavell, the Commander-in-Chief and Viceroy of India before  Mountbatten.  Andrew Cullum will play Clement Attlee, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1945 to 1951, while Richard Teverson will play Cyril Radcliffe, the chairman of the Boundary Commission for the Partition of India.

The drama has also cast Sidhant Gupta as Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of independent India, Chirag Vohra as Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi, and Rajendra Chawla as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel,  the first deputy prime minister and home minister of India.

The drama is set to be available for streaming on SonyLiv in 2024. However, details of its release date have not yet been disclosed.
