In June 2024, fans of the renowned qawwali artist Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan received news that was nothing short of extraordinary. After more than 27 years, a previously unheard album called “Chain of Light” was discovered among a treasure of recordings that had been stored in Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records vaults. The music industry was rocked by this revelation, which offered a window into Khan’s skill at a critical juncture in his career.
The discovered tapes from April 1990, which is now acknowledged as a pivotal time in Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s life. When Real World Records signed him in 1989, he was about to receive widespread recognition. “Chain of Light” presents a singular chance to see Khan at this pivotal moment, his voice bursting with the strength and emotion that would soon resound with listeners all over the world.
The Discovery:
The album’s story demonstrates the eternal power of music. It was accidentally discovered within the massive collection of Real World’s archives during a relocation effort in 2021. According to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s longtime manager, this rediscovery “was a real delight.” He emphasizes the significance of the period, adding, “1990 was a pivotal year in Nusrat’s career… “Everything just clicked.”
“Chain of Light” has four traditional qawwali pieces, each with the gripping intensity that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s performances were known for. The CD features Khan and his ensemble of eight other acclaimed vocalists. This ensemble structure was a cornerstone of qawwali music, with the lead vocalist and chorus interacting to produce a dynamic and uplifting soundscape.
